Live Review: Jonas Brothers in Phoenix

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski / LiveDaily Contributor

On a sticky, humid night in Arizona, the Jonas Brothers proved they are more than just teen dreams who provide pogo-worthy pop songs for the shrieking, crying masses.

At Phoenix’s Cricket Wireless Pavilion Friday (7/11), the New Jersey threesome–Nick, 15, Joe, 18, and Kevin, 20–rocked a near-capacity crowd of 15,000 by playing their own instruments, styling pop star-quality harmonies, and commanding the stage like seasoned veterans more than twice their age.
The Arizona-born Joe Jonas, wearing a “Miami Vice”-worthy suit with a yellow T-shirt, took full command of the T-shaped stage, running up, down and across it in the staggering heat. Kevin, who is amazingly well-versed in guitar, spun with his instrument. And Nick showed his sensitive side during the piano-driven “A Little Bit Longer.” The song, written about Nick’s battle with diabetes, was dedicated to a local fan who recently died after an ATV crash.

Joe and Kevin Jonas performed a tumbling act across and down the stage, giving the crowd even another reason to cheer and scream. And, finally, Nick Jonas tossed numerous drumsticks to his band’s touring drummer to see if he could catch the sticks and play drums at the same time. After awhile, Nick Jonas joined the drummer in an instrumental version of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.” Yep, they even have good taste in music.

The Jonas Brothers got things started after the PA pumped “We Will Rock You.” A small orchestra of eight players performed a dramatic song as fire lit up the walkway that traveled from the stage, up around the band and back down. Lasers shot overhead and explosions announced the arrival of the Jonas Brothers from beneath the stage. The sibling trio, whose father was a pastor, launched into “That’s Just the Way We Roll.”

The 20-song set was also a night of stating the obvious. Girls in the crowd–and some boys–fervently sang along with the Jonas Brothers, echoing every word to every song (including my 11-year-old niece, who only a month ago proclaimed that she didn’t care for them). Joe Jonas, who removed his sunglasses to the audience’s glee, encouraged the crowd to sing the “la la la” portion of “Don’t Take My Heart.”

The production was first rate, taking every cliche–in a good way–and melding it into one show. Green lasers shot overhead during “Hold On.” The small orchestra, when not playing, provided goofy dance numbers to songs such as “B B Good.” Giant blowers shot confetti into the audience during “Still in Love With You.”

“How many of you saw a little movie we were in called ‘Camp Rock’?” Joe Jonas asked. “Did you like it?” he added, encouraging more screaming. Roadies then carried stools to the tip of the stage, where the brothers perched themselves to perform an acoustic version of the “Camp Rock” cut “I Need to Find You.”

The concert was a family affair. Before the show, the Jonas Brothers’ father announced from the stage that one of his assistants was going to choose four fans from the back of the venue and provide them with front-row tickets. Afterward, he and the heartthrobs’ mother were accompanied by a handful of bodyguards to their seats. It was as if they were the rock stars for the amount of shrieks generated by their visit.

It seems the Jonas Brothers have provided a little competition for fellow Disney phenom Miley Cyrus.
